Watching little kittens grow and develop from day to day is a real joy. To give them the best possible start in life, it is essential to provide them with enough high-quality food.
But which food is best for these little kittens?
1. The first weeks of life
In the first few weeks of life, kittens are fed exclusively on their mother's milk, which provides them with all the nutrients they need for healthy development. From the third to fourth week of life, kittens begin to eat additional food. However, this depends heavily on the mother's milk supply. The more solid food the kittens eat, the less milk they receive from their mother.
2. The first weeks of life: Supplementary feeding
Our two products Sanabelle Kitten and Heimat Kitten are ideal as supplementary feeds. Both products can be fed enriched with a little water.
3. The first weeks of life: Variety is essential!
In their early development, cats form a feeding behaviour that they retain. It therefore makes sense to offer variety in the supplementary food, for example by combining wet and dry food. This means that a possible changeover at a later stage does not pose any problems. To prevent acceptance problems, dry food can also be soaked in rearing milk for the first few days.
As the suckling period can have a positive influence on behaviour in later adulthood, it is recommended that kittens are not weaned from milk until they are 6 weeks old. Even at this stage, kittens can already cover up to 30% of their energy requirements through complementary feeding.
4. Your kitten is moving in with you: Which food is the right one
If you are adopting a kitten from a breeder or from a different household, it should be separated from its mother from the 8th week of life at the earliest. In particularly sensitive kittens, weaning can lead to digestive problems due to stress. During this time, it is important to be particularly patient and loving. In addition, you should not change your kitten's food during this phase, but continue to feed it the same food that your kitten was fed by the breeder or previous owner. Once your kitten has settled in well, you can feed a food of your choice.
