How much food should my puppy receive?

The amount of food a puppy or young dog should be given depends on various factors. It is not only important whether I have chosen a food for a large or a small dog breed. You can find out how much food your puppy should be given here.

  1. 1. Determine the right amount of food for your puppy
  2. 2. How do I read the junior feeding recommendation correctly?
  3. 3. Do you have further questions about how much your puppy is allowed to eat?

1. Determine the right amount of food for your puppy

Each individual food has its own feeding recommendation, depending on the fat, protein and energy content, the recommended amount of food for the puppy varies. You will always find these on the back of our dog food bags.

Our feeding recommendations are always given in grams per day. In this article, we explain how many meals you should divide the daily ration into: How often should my puppy be fed?

  • Firstly, the current age of the puppy, which determines the correct line in the feeding recommendation.
  • Secondly, the expected ideal final weight of the adult dog. How big a dog will grow depends of course on the breed, but there are also differences within the breed. The breeder or vet can help here if necessary. There are also growth curves that can be used to estimate the expected final weight.

With the expected final weight of the dog, you can select the appropriate column in our feeding recommendation.

2. How do I read the junior feeding recommendation correctly?

For example: A 4-month-old Labrador puppy, which will weight an estimated 30 kg as an adult dog, should therefore be given 400 g of „HPC Junior with Lamb & Rice“ per day. This daily portion should be divided into several meals a day, especially for younger dogs.

However, as growth and development depend on many different influences (e.g. temperament, breed, etc.), it can also be helpful to ask the vet at the next check-up how he assesses the puppy's development.
