... summer is here - you enjoy the warmth and lightness and want to be outside with your furry friend. A great time.
But of course, summer also brings hot days with exhausting heat. Such days are also exhausting for your furry friend. Dogs have an even harder time in summer than humans because they are unable to sweat. Only panting provides your four-legged friend with some relief. Your animal friend is much more likely to overheat in oppressively hot weather, so we have a few good tips for both of you and you can enjoy the summer in a relaxed manner despite the heat.
Sunshine is good - shade is better
Protect your furry friend from prolonged, constant exposure to the sun to prevent sunburn or sunstroke and offer cool, shady retreats.
It is best to walk your dog in the cooler morning and evening hours, as the asphalt gets far too hot for their paws at midday and the sun stings your four-legged friend's coat. Dogs with dark coats suffer more from the heat than those with light-colored coats. It is better to choose shorter and shady routes, e.g. in the forest or park. Dogs love fun, games and action, but in summer it can be a little quieter.
Cooling off your dog
During the summer weeks, your dog needs to drink plenty of fresh, cool water. Make sure that your furry friend always has enough water available - at the feeding place and also outside in the garden. Simply change the water from time to time.
Refreshing water on the skin is of course a popular way to cool off on hot summer sunshine days. Remember that your dog is covered in fur all over and water has to penetrate the fur first. So don't turn off the garden hose too soon and enjoy the water fun together with your furry friend. Start by hosing down the limbs and organize water fights with your four-legged friend.
Many dogs just love to jump into the water - at the lake, in the pond or even on vacation by the sea. Always check in advance whether your bathing area is open to dogs. A stream or a robust paddling pool are also a great alternative.
By the way: A visit to the groomer can also help.
Summertime is ice cream time
These days, a delicious ice cream is not only popular with us humans, your dog also loves to refresh himself with an ice cream. A large ice cube made from water is easy to make and well tolerated.
