1. General description of the service and its implementation

On the above websites you will find our end customer, business partner and breeder online store, where you can order and pay for pet food products and accessories. The products purchased will be delivered to the address you specify by a delivery service. The online stores can be used via standard desktop and mobile devices (e.g. smartphones and tablets). You can create a customer account in the respective online store to store your data and track orders.

2. Implementation of accessibility requirements

The accessibility of our online store is governed by the requirements of the Accessibility Enhancement Act (BFSG) and the Accessibility Enhancement Act Ordinance (BFSGV). According to these regulations, services such as ordering products in our online store must be accessible. This means that ordering products in our online store must be discoverable, accessible, and usable by people with disabilities in the usual manner, without undue difficulty, and generally without the need for assistance from others.

We meet the legal accessibility requirements by adhering to the guidelines of the harmonized EU standards for accessibility (EN 301 549) and the “Web Content Accessibility Guidelines” (WCAG) 2.2 (Conformity Level AA). Accordingly, the following measures, among others, have been implemented in connection with accessible design:

Improved keyboard accessibility and navigation structure

Full keyboard accessibility of the website is ensured. This includes, in particular:

  • Correcting the tab order in key areas such as the menu, navigation / breadcrumb trail, sign-in / login, customer account, shopping cart, checkout, and help section
  • Resolving issues with focus loss and inaccessible elements
  • Consistent navigation sequence corresponding to the visual structure

Benefits: Users who cannot use a mouse (e.g., people with motor impairments or screen reader users) can use all functions logically and without restrictions.

Optimisation of touch and click areas
Interactive elements have been adjusted in terms of size and spacing:

  • Enlarged touch-sensitive areas / touch targets (e.g., filters, breadcrumbs, quantity controls, social icons, edit links)
  • Improved usability on mobile devices

Benefits: This reduces input errors and significantly simplifies navigation, particularly for users with motor impairments or those using small screens.

Visible focus and interaction states
Clear visual states have been implemented for all interactive components:

  • Clearly distinguishable focus states for keyboard navigation
  • Consistent hover and active states for buttons, sliders, variants and interactive elements when clicked or tapped.

Benefit: Users can always tell which element is currently active or in focus.

Logical structure and screen reader support
The content structure of the pages is marked up correctly from a technical standpoint:

  • Use of semantically correct HTML headings (heading hierarchy)
  • Correct linking of form fields and labels
  • Removal of incorrect or duplicate IDs
  • Correct markup of lists (e.g., in the footer)

In addition:

  • ARIA roles and attributes are implemented
  • Missing references (e.g., aria-labelledby) are implemented
  • Tab components in the checkout are marked up

Benefits: Screen readers can parse content in a structured manner and read it aloud correctly. Forms are easy to use and understand.

Improvements to error messages and forms
Form interactions have been standardized and made more accessible:

  • Consistent presentation of error messages (visually and for screen readers)
  • Clear, structured output order for assistive technologies
  • Clear labels and feedback during input

Benefits: Users quickly understand errors and can easily correct them – especially important for screen reader users.

Contrast and visual adjustments
The color scheme is designed to be clear and easy to navigate:

  • High contrast for interactive elements (call-to-actions, buttons, badges, and form states)
  • Optimally structured visibility of focus frames and interactive elements

Benefits: Content remains easily readable even for users with visual impairments or in poor lighting conditions.

Mobile Accessibility and Technical Aids (Overlays)
Specific improvements for mobile use and assistive technologies:

  • Optimized display of overlays (e.g., Trusted Shops, Minicart)
  • Optimized display for screen readers such as TalkBack (Android)
  • Proper functionality of mobile navigation elements

Benefits: Seamless usability is ensured even on mobile devices and with screen reader technology.

Alternative text and non-textual content

  • Adding alternative text for product images in search autocomplete

Benefits: Image content is described in a way that is accessible and understandable for text-to-speech and screen readers.

Linguistic and semantic improvements

  • Optimized display of screen reader labels (e.g., icons, navigation elements)
  • Optimized display of page titles

Benefits: Assistive technologies provide clear, understandable information, which improves navigation.

UX Improvements That Impact Accessibility

  • Clear structure and feedback during checkout (e.g., clear section headings)
  • Reliable functionality of login and shopping cart features

Benefits: Clearer, consistent user guidance reduces cognitive load and improves overall accessibility.
