The term glycemic index (GI) was developed by Jenkins et al. (1981) for human nutrition. However, it is assumed that this principle can also be applied to the diet of dogs and cats.

What is the gylcemic index?

The glycaemic index describes the influence of a carbohydrate-containing food on the blood sugar level. The higher the value, the higher the blood sugar level rises.

Different sources of starch can have different effects on blood sugar levels, and it is not just the absolute starch content that is decisive. Rice, for example, has a much higher glycemic index than corn.

Which products have a low glycemic index?

What is the advantage of compositions with a low glycemic index?

Eating foods with a low GI ensures a stable blood sugar level and can therefore contribute to the prevention of obesity (nutritional and metabolic disease), for example.
